Shoes live or die on the filament. Regular hard plastic (PLA) makes a shoe-shaped brick. You want TPU — flexible filament — and the number on the spool (Shore hardness, like 85A or 95A) decides everything.

Ultra-soft, squishy like a running-shoe sole. Raw 75A filament is nearly unprintable (it buckles like a wet noodle) — this softness is what MorPhlex reaches after printing.
85A the sweet spot
Midsoles & insoles. Squishes under your heel, springs back with every step. Needs direct drive + slow printing (~15–30 mm/s), but this is the comfort zone.
90A firm flex
The easy printer: feeds cleanly, still flexes. Most wearable shoe models (like the Airberry) are tuned for TPU 90A.
95A+ outsole only
Great where the shoe meets concrete — hard-wearing tread that survives the street. But a WHOLE shoe in 95A? Heavy, stiff, zero bounce. That's the trap.

The cheat code: BIQU MorPhlex. A "variable hardness" TPU made for shoes. It prints firm at 90A — so it feeds through the printer like a normal, easy filament — then softens to about 75A afterwards. You print at brick-hardness, you walk on cloud-softness. Best of both worlds, and exactly why soft-after, firm-during beats plain hard TPU.

03Print Rules
TPU isn't hard — it's just different. Six rules and your shoes come out right:
- Go slow. 20–40 mm/s (20–30 for extra-soft). Almost every failed flexible print is speed, not the material.
- Direct drive only for soft TPU. Pushing floppy filament through a long Bowden tube is pushing a wet noodle — it buckles. 95A survives Bowden; 85A and softer usually won't.
- Dry the filament. TPU drinks moisture from the air → stringy, bubbly, weak prints. Dry it before a big shoe print.
- Print them standing. Shoes print upright on the plate — that's how the designs are meant to go, and standing on textured PEI they need no supports (TPU supports fuse on and never come off).
- Use the designer's infill. If the model page or its print profile says a specific infill — pattern or percentage — use exactly that: the designer tuned it for the shoe. No spec given? Then 10–25% gyroid is your fallback — it flexes evenly like foam. More air = squishier step.
- Wear them wet. TPU is abrasion-tough and doesn't care about water — people print shower slides. Mild soap, rinse, air-dry.
Fit tip: print ONE insole first.
One flat insole tests your size, your filament and your printer for pennies — before you commit 40 hours to a full pair.
